Guest Speaker: Martin Brown
Starting out as a teacher, Martin’s love of storytelling took him into theatre where he managed hundreds of live shows and events. He then produced television commercials and music videos before moving into feature films as an art director, most notably on Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.
Martin went on to manage several diverse projects for Luhrmann. He was co-producer on the groundbreaking Romeo + Juliet (1996). He was the lead producer of Moulin Rouge, which went on to win the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy of 2001 and was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, winning two for Costume Design and Art Direction.
Martin was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Producer of the Year in 2001 by the Producers Guild of America (PGA).
He then established Martin Brown Films, a company devoted to developing and producing films for the local and international markets. He has served on the board of Screen Tasmania and has been engaged by the Australian Film Commission (AFC), Screen New South Wales, and The Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG) as a reader and consultant.
Martin was Director of Award Courses at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) until May 2017. He is currently CEO of Martin Brown Films.
