Guest Speaker: Alan Maxwell

Australian-born, New Zealand–raised polymath Alan Maxwell has done everything from working as a graphic designer and typographer to spending 14 years directing TV commercials in Australia and the UK. He has worked with agencies such as TCO, Host, Singleton Ogilvy & Mather, J. Walter Thompson, and McCann-Erickson Advertising for brands such as McDonald’s, Johnson & Johnson, Ford, Shell, Lego, and Nintendo.

Alan’s entry into the world of film began in 1991 while working as the creative director of the launch of the Mitsubishi Magna at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The showpiece was ‘flying in’ the full vehicle into the auditorium accompanied by film and 3D computer animation elements, a concept of which he is proud.

This wide range of directing experience in film and TV production eventually expanded into 3D and visual effects (VFX). Alan is currently a lecturer at Australia’s leading training institution for the VFX and computer games industries, the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE).

At this month’s Choc Tops meeting, Alan will talk with Sidat de Silva about how directors and actors can approach working in scenes involving VFX. The talk will be illustrated with images.
