Guest Speaker: Miranda Tapsell

Miranda TapsellMiranda was born in Darwin and her people are the Larrakia. She grew up in Kakadu National Park and began performing at the age of seven when she joined a tap dance group. As a young teenager she was enrolled in summer short courses at NIDA and also performed with the Corrugated Iron youth drama group in Darwin.

In 2004 at 16 she won the Bell Shakespeare Company regional performance scholarship. After finishing school she was accepted to study acting at NIDA full-time and graduated from the three-year course in 2008.

Miranda has since performed the lead role in Yibiyung (dir. Wesley Enoch) for Belvoir St Theatre and Malthouse Theatre Co. She then toured with Bell Shakespeare’s Actors at Work (dir. Wayne Blair), has appeared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Darwin Theatre Co and also appeared in Mother’s Tongue for Yirra Yaakin Theatre.

For film and television she was first cast as Princess Desdemona in the “Magical Tales” television series, and then went on to play a role in the feature film Primal.

The film that Miranda will be talking about at Choc Tops is The Sapphires (dir. Wayne Blair), in which she played one of the four leading characters. The film screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival Midnight Gala.

Miranda also appeared in the ABC1 telemovie Mabo, which premiered at this year’s Sydney Film Festival. She will be playing a guest role in the ABC1 series “Redfern Now”, in which Wayne Blair also appears.
