Guest Speaker: Dr Hillary Ray

Hillary Ray Hillary was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Paris and New York, starting work in the American art scene dealing in paintings, rare books, engravings and maps, then working in the maps, drawings and photographs department at the Museum of the City of New York.

Hillary then studied law at the University of Cambridge, practised in London and moved to Australia, where she completed an LL.B. at the Australian National University and commenced practising law in Sydney.

Hillary began her legal career as a solicitor with Baker & McKenzie specialising in intellectual property and information technology, working on both commercial and litigious matters.

She has since worked at Westpac Banking Corporation in multiple areas of law and at national regulator ASIC. She has advised on domestic regulatory issues at ASIC, APRA, and AUSTRAC and dealt with overseas regulators such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (USA) and the Financial Services Authority (UK).

During the Global Financial Crisis, Hillary was responsible for liaison between ASIC and APRA and overseas regulators including the FSA and the SEC, dealing with urgent information exchange requests concerning dually listed companies.

Since 2013, Hillary has conducted her own senior regulatory compliance consultancy, taking on assignments for various Australian firms including Sparke Helmore Lawyers and Gadens Lawyers (as Special Counsel).

She established her own regulatory specialist firm, Hemisphere Legal, in February 2016.
